Questions. Short answers.

Can I upload an EPUB bought from a store?

Only if it has no DRM. Store copies are usually encrypted; authors can download a DRM-free file from their publishing dashboard.

How much does it cost to translate an EPUB?

A 90,000-word novel costs $22.50 in Read mode or $54 in Publish mode, with glossary, style guide and review notes. Pro includes 200,000 words a month.

Can I get a bilingual EPUB?

Yes. Bilingual EPUB places each translated paragraph under the original, which helps language learners. It is included from the Starter plan.

Does the translated EPUB work on Kindle?

Yes. Use Send to Kindle on the ready screen, or upload the file to Kindle Direct Publishing, which accepts EPUB.

How EPUB translation works, and what to prepare

What is inside an EPUB file

An EPUB is a zipped folder of web pages: one HTML file per chapter or section, a stylesheet, fonts, images and a navigation file that drives the table of contents. Translating an EPUB well means changing the text inside those pages without touching the structure around it.

Transleaf replaces text in place. Chapter files, CSS, embedded fonts and images are carried over, so the translated book opens with the same contents page and the same look.

DRM: the one thing that stops an upload

Ebooks bought in a store are usually encrypted with DRM, and an encrypted EPUB cannot be read, so the upload screen rejects it and says why. Authors and publishers can use a DRM-free copy instead:

  • Export a fresh EPUB from the tool you wrote the book in, such as Vellum, Atticus or Sigil
  • Upload the Word manuscript as DOCX
  • Upload a PDF of the book, though EPUB keeps more of the structure

Footnotes, links and the table of contents

In EPUB, a footnote is a link to a note plus a link back. Both ends are translated, and both links keep working. The same goes for the navigation file: chapter titles in the table of contents are translated, so the e-reader menu matches the headings in the text.

Fonts, CSS and scene breaks

Embedded fonts and the book’s CSS are carried over unchanged, so headings, drop caps and scene breaks look the same as before. If the target language needs characters the embedded font lacks, as Japanese does with most Latin fonts, a font that has them is used for the translated text only.

Bilingual EPUB for language learners

A bilingual EPUB places each translated paragraph under the original. It helps readers learning the language and anyone checking a translation paragraph by paragraph. Bilingual copies are included from the Starter plan.

Cost of a typical ebook

A 90,000-word novel costs $22.50 in Read mode and $54 in Publish mode. You choose which parts to translate on the first step. The copyright page is left out by default, because a translated edition needs its own.

What you can download

The finished book downloads as EPUB, as a Word file for editing, as PDF, or as a bilingual EPUB. Send to Kindle delivers it straight to a Kindle. Files stay available for 30 days and are then deleted.
