PDF translator that keeps the layout

Translate contracts, reports, manuals and books in PDF without rebuilding the layout. Tables, columns and numbering stay where they were. Two-column pages are read column by column, so sentences are not cut in half at the gutter.

Questions. Short answers.

What if my PDF is a scan?

Use the Scans and photos tab. The text is recognized first, then translated, and you can check the first 3 pages for free.

How much does it cost to translate a PDF?

A 14-page contract of about 6,800 words falls under the minimum: $3 in Read mode or $9 in Publish mode. Longer files cost $0.25 or $0.60 per 1,000 words.

Can I edit the translated PDF?

Download it as a Word file as well as a PDF, then change the text in Word or any editor that opens DOCX.

Can I translate a password-protected PDF?

Remove the password first. Locked PDFs cannot be opened for translation, and the upload screen tells you when a file is locked.

What happens to a PDF with two columns?

Each column is read top to bottom before the next one, the way a person reads it. The translation goes back into the same two columns.

More language pairs. Same file, other languages.

Every format you work with. Layout kept in each one.

Translating a PDF without rebuilding the layout

Two kinds of PDF

A PDF contains either real text or pictures of text. Exported from Word or InDesign, it has text you can select. Scanned or photographed, it is an image, and the words have to be recognized before they can be translated.

This page is about the first kind. For scans and photographed pages, the Scans and photos tab runs text recognition first, then translates.

Reading order: columns, sidebars, captions

A PDF stores letters by position on the page, not in reading order. A careless tool reads straight across two columns and mixes their sentences. Transleaf works out the order a person would read: down the first column, then the second, with sidebars and captions kept apart from the main text.

Tables and numbers

Tables keep their rows and columns. Numbers inside them are converted to the target language’s format, so €1,240.00 in an English contract becomes 1.240,00 € in the German version. Clause numbers such as 2.1 and 2.2 stay as they are.

Footnotes, headers and form fields

Footnote markers keep their numbers, and each note stays at the foot of its page. Running headers and page numbers are translated in place. In fillable forms the labels are translated while the fields stay empty, so the translated form can still be filled in on screen.

When the translation needs more room

A translated line is often longer than the space the original had. Text is reflowed within its block and spacing is adjusted slightly, rather than shrinking the type until it is hard to read or letting it run into the next column.

Before you upload

Three quick checks save a failed upload.

  • Remove the password. Locked PDFs cannot be opened for translation.
  • Try selecting a line of text. If you cannot, the PDF is a scan; use Scans and photos.
  • Keep the file under 300 MB.

What a PDF costs to translate

Short documents pay the minimum. A 7,000-word contract costs $3 in Read mode and $9 in Publish mode. A 40,000-word manual costs $10 or $24. The first three pages are free to preview, so you can check terms and table layout before paying.

PDF back, or Word to edit

The translation comes back as a PDF laid out like the original. If you need to change wording afterwards, download the Word version as well. Editing a PDF directly is slow, and Word is where most people make their final changes.
