Questions. Short answers.
How much does it cost to translate a book from English to Portuguese?
A one-off translation costs $0.25 per 1,000 words for reading or $0.60 with glossary, style guide and review. A 90,000-word novel is $54 in Publish mode. You see the exact price before paying.
Will names stay the same in the Portuguese translation?
Yes. The whole file is read first and every person, place and invented word gets one Portuguese form. You can change any of them before translation starts.
Is Brazilian Portuguese different from European?
Yes: spelling, forms of address and many everyday words differ. Pick the variant once and the whole file follows it.
Which spelling rules are used?
The 1990 Orthographic Agreement for both variants, with the differences it still allows, such as facto in Portugal and fato in Brazil.

English to Portuguese: one variant, one spelling, from cover to cover
Brazil or Portugal
Brazilian and European Portuguese share a grammar and a spelling agreement, yet readers hear the difference within a paragraph. Brazil says você; Portugal leans on tu and on verb forms without a pronoun. A bus is an ônibus in São Paulo and an autocarro in Lisbon.
Choose the variant on the names and style step. Our sample preview uses Brazilian Portuguese, which is why the ferries in the first sentence are balsas.

Spelling after the 1990 agreement
Both variants follow the 1990 Orthographic Agreement, which still leaves room for differences. Portugal writes facto and receção, Brazil writes fato and recepção. The variant you choose decides these spellings on every page.
Você, tu and the polite forms
Address is set once in the style settings. Informal suits friends and family, formal uses o senhor and a senhora, and per relationship follows each pair of characters. In Brazilian dialogue the informal setting gives você; in European Portuguese it gives tu.
How dialogue is punctuated
Portuguese fiction usually opens each line of speech with a dash, while some Brazilian publishers prefer quotation marks. The translation follows the common convention for the variant you picked. If your publisher has a house style, write it in Notes for the translator.
Numbers, dates and currency
Portuguese writes decimals with a comma. Brazil groups thousands with a dot and Portugal usually with a space, so 1,240.50 becomes 1.240,50 in São Paulo and 1 240,50 in Lisbon. Dates go day first, and a Brazilian price puts R$ before the amount. These conventions are applied in documents and tables as well as in running text.
Price of a Portuguese edition
The total depends on the English text you select. Our sample novel, 92,400 words, costs $23.10 in Read mode or $55.44 in Publish mode. Untick the back matter you do not need on the first step and the price drops before you pay. Card, Apple Pay and PayPal are accepted.
Names in the glossary
Lantern Quay becomes o Cais das Lanternas and the Tidewardens become os Guardiões da Maré. Portuguese marks gender on the article, so the glossary keeps the full form, article included, and every chapter uses it.
What to check before paying
In the free chapter, look at the forms of address in the first conversation, the spelling of words that differ between the variants, and the dialogue punctuation. All three are settings rather than mistakes to fix by hand. Change what is wrong and rerun the chapter.
