Chapter 1

Der Morgen, an dem die Fähren ausblieben

On the morning the ferries stopped, Mara Ellison walked the length of the Lantern Quay and counted the boats that would not leave. Eleven. Nan had always said the harbour kept its own ledger.

Am Morgen, als die Fähren ausblieben, ging Mara Ellison den Laternenkai entlang und zählte die Boote, die nicht ablegen würden. Elf. Oma hatte immer gesagt, der Hafen führe sein eigenes Kassenbuch.

Chapter 24

Die erste Fähre

The first ferry came back on a Tuesday. Mara Ellison stood at the end of the Lantern Quay with Nan beside her, and the Tidewardens were nowhere to be seen.

Die erste Fähre kam an einem Dienstag zurück. Mara Ellison stand vorn am Laternenkai, Oma neben sich, und die Gezeitenwächter waren nirgends zu sehen.

OriginalTranslation

How it works. From upload to the finished file.

  1. 01The whole manuscript is read before translation, so chapter 20 knows what happened in chapter 2.
  2. 02Forms of address, regional variant and idioms are set once in a style guide.
  3. 03Review notes mark choices worth a second look; they never appear in the final file.

Questions. Short answers.

Can I publish the translation?

Yes, you own the translation of your own book. Stores such as Amazon KDP ask whether AI was used; check their current rules before uploading.

How long does a novel take?

About 12 minutes for 90,000 words once you have paid.

Can I change a name after reading chapter one?

Yes. Edit the glossary and run chapter one again, free up to three times. The full book uses whatever the glossary says when you pay.

More language pairs. Same file, other languages.

Every format you work with. Layout kept in each one.

From manuscript to translated edition, step by step

Step one: upload and check what gets translated

Upload the book as EPUB, Word, PDF, MOBI or FB2. The analysis counts words, chapters, footnotes and images, and lists every part of the book: front matter, chapters, back matter. Untick anything you do not need. The copyright page is unticked already, because a translated edition needs its own.

If some images contain text, such as a map or a timetable, you will see a warning. Text inside images stays as it is unless you add image text translation, $0.40 per order.

Step two: names and style

The glossary lists every person, place and invented word found in the book, with how often each appears. People keep their names; places and invented words are translated. Change only the ones you care about, then set how characters address each other, the regional variant and how idioms are handled.

Step three: read chapter one for free

Chapter one is translated before you pay. Read it side by side with the original or on its own. Review notes mark places where a choice was made that you might want to check, such as an idiom kept as an image or a form of address.

If something is wrong, go back, change the glossary or the style, and run the chapter again. Three reruns are free.

Step four: pay once or use a plan

The full price is shown next to the chapter. For our sample novel, 92,400 words in Publish mode, it is $55.44 as a one-off payment. Pro at $29 a month covers the same book with words left over. The full translation takes about 12 minutes.

Step five: download and publish

Download EPUB for stores and e-readers, Word for an editor, PDF for print, or a bilingual EPUB. Before you publish, check what each store asks about AI translation. Amazon KDP, Kobo and Apple Books ask whether AI was used, and their rules change, so read them on the day you upload.

Translating a series

On the Business plan, a shared glossary per series keeps every name the same from book one to book five, and each new book starts with it. Characters introduced in book three are added as you go.

Where the decision stays with you

Defaults cover most of the book. A few choices only you can make:

  • Which names stay in the original language
  • How formal the characters are with each other
  • Whether a pun is adapted or translated closely
  • Whether the book is ready for readers. No human editor is involved, so read it before you publish.
