Questions. Short answers.

Do comments and tracked changes survive?

Comments are kept in place. Accept or reject tracked changes before uploading so only the final text is translated.

How much does it cost to translate a Word document?

A 40-page report of about 16,000 words costs $4 in Read mode or $9.60 in Publish mode. Files under the minimum cost $3 or $9.

Will the table of contents still work?

Yes. Heading styles are kept, so the table of contents updates in Word as usual, with the translated headings.

Can I translate only part of a document?

Yes. On the check step, untick the pages you do not need, and the price drops with the word count.

Will my company template still apply?

Yes. Translated text keeps the paragraph and character styles of the original, so changing a style in Word changes it in the translation too.

More language pairs. Same file, other languages.

Every format you work with. Layout kept in each one.

Translating Word documents with styles, lists and fields intact

Why styles matter more than formatting

A well-built Word document is held together by styles: Heading 1, Heading 2, Body Text, List Bullet. The table of contents, section numbering and the navigation pane all read those styles. A translation pasted in with direct formatting breaks all of them at once.

Transleaf writes the translation into the existing paragraphs, so each one keeps its style. Update the table of contents in Word and it fills with the translated headings.

Tracked changes and comments

Accept or reject tracked changes before you upload, or deleted text may be translated along with the final version. Comments are kept and stay attached to the same passage, so a reviewer’s question still sits next to the sentence it is about.

Numbered lists and cross-references

Section numbers like 2.1 and 2.1.3 are generated by Word from the list style, not typed. They stay generated, so adding a section later renumbers everything as before. Cross-references such as see section 4 remain fields and update when you press F9.

Headers, footers and footnotes

Headers and footers are translated per section, so a different first page or separate odd and even pages keep their own text. Footnotes and endnotes stay linked to their reference marks and renumber the way Word normally does.

Translating only part of a document

On the first step the document is split into pages. Untick an appendix that is already translated, or a long data table that should stay in English, and the price drops before you pay. Skipped parts stay in the file as they were.

When the font has to change

Fonts change only when the target language needs characters the original font does not have. A Latin font without Japanese characters is swapped for Japanese text, and an old font missing Polish letters such as ł and ż is swapped too. Everything else keeps the original font.

Pricing for reports and manuscripts

A 16,000-word report costs $4 in Read mode or $9.60 in Publish mode. A 90,000-word manuscript costs $22.50 or $54. Untick appendices or pages you do not need on the first step and the total changes before you pay.

Sending it to a reviewer

Word is the format most reviewers want. In Publish mode you also get review notes that point to choices worth a second look. They are shown in Transleaf and never written into the document, so the file you send is clean.
