Spanish original

La mañana en que los transbordadores dejaron de zarpar, Mara Ellison recorrió el Muelle de las Linternas de punta a punta y contó los barcos que no saldrían. Once. En algún lugar tras la niebla, los Guardianes de la Marea también contaban.

English translation

On the morning the ferries stopped, Mara Ellison walked the length of the Lantern Quay and counted the boats that would not leave. Eleven. Somewhere behind the fog, the Tidewardens were counting too.

Questions. Short answers.

How much does it cost to translate a book from Spanish to English?

A one-off translation costs $0.25 per 1,000 words for reading or $0.60 with glossary, style guide and review. A 90,000-word novel is $54 in Publish mode. You see the exact price before paying.

Will names stay the same in the English translation?

Yes. The whole file is read first and every person, place and invented word gets one English form. You can change any of them before translation starts.

Do Latin American and European Spanish both work?

Yes. The variant is recognized from the text, and regional words are translated by meaning rather than by the dictionary entry.

Will Spanish names keep their accents?

Yes. Names such as Ángela or Muñoz keep their accents and ñ in the English text, and the glossary keeps every spelling identical.

Spanish to English translation with every speaker clear

Who is speaking? Restoring dropped subjects

Spanish verbs carry the person, so writers drop the subject: dijo can be he said, she said or you said. English needs the pronoun. The translation restores it from context, which is easy in one sentence and harder in a long dialogue between three people.

Because the whole book is read first, the translation knows who is in the scene. Where a sentence is truly ambiguous in the original, a review note says so instead of guessing silently.

Diminutives and terms of endearment

Abuelita is not little grandmother. Spanish diminutives carry affection, irony or smallness depending on who says them. The translation renders them by tone: grandma, granny, or a softer sentence around the word. Terms of endearment like mi vida or cariño become what an English speaker would say in the same moment.

Ser, estar and the subjunctive

English has one verb where Spanish has ser and estar, and it rarely marks the subjunctive. Está aburrido and es aburrido mean bored and boring. The meaning moves into English word choice instead of grammar, which is exactly where a literal translation goes wrong.

Spain, Mexico, Argentina: no setting needed

The source variant is recognized from the text. Voseo from Buenos Aires, vosotros from Madrid and regional vocabulary from Mexico City are all read correctly. Regional words are translated by meaning, so a guagua in a Cuban novel becomes a bus.

Accents in names

Names keep their accents and ñ in the English text: Ángela, Muñoz, Begoña. The glossary stores each spelling once, and every chapter uses it. If a name should be anglicized, change its rule before translation starts.

US, UK or Australian readers

The target variant is a setting: US, UK or Australian English. It decides spelling such as color or colour, words such as apartment or flat, and how dates and quotation marks are written, from the first chapter to the last.

Reading the free chapter

Check a dialogue scene with three or more speakers first, because that is where restored pronouns are tested hardest. If a line seems to belong to the wrong person, see whether a review note already points at it. Rerunning the chapter after a style change costs nothing, up to three times.

Price for a Spanish file

You pay per 1,000 Spanish words, $0.25 in Read mode or $0.60 in Publish mode. A 60,000-word memoir costs $15 to read or $36 to publish. Starter at $12 a month includes 60,000 words in Read mode, enough for a memoir of that length every month.
