English original

On the morning the ferries stopped, Mara Ellison walked the length of the Lantern Quay and counted the boats that would not leave. Eleven. Somewhere behind the fog, the Tidewardens were counting too.

Dutch translation

Op de ochtend dat de veerboten stillagen, liep Mara Ellison de hele Lantaarnkade af en telde de boten die niet zouden vertrekken. Elf. Ergens achter de mist telden ook de Getijwachters.

Questions. Short answers.

How much does it cost to translate a book from English to Dutch?

A one-off translation costs $0.25 per 1,000 words for reading or $0.60 with glossary, style guide and review. A 90,000-word novel is $54 in Publish mode. You see the exact price before paying.

Will names stay the same in the Dutch translation?

Yes. The whole file is read first and every person, place and invented word gets one Dutch form. You can change any of them before translation starts.

Does it handle Flemish readers?

Yes. Choose Belgium as the variant on the names and style step. Everyday words then follow Flemish usage instead of the Netherlands default.

Which Dutch spelling is used?

The official word list shared by the Netherlands and Belgium, so compounds and hyphens follow the same rules on every page.

More language pairs. Same file, other languages.

English to Dutch translation for the Netherlands and Flanders

Compounds are made once

Dutch joins words the way German does, and the spelling rules for joining them are strict. Lantern Quay becomes Lantaarnkade: one word, no space, no hyphen. The Tidewardens become de Getijwachters. Each compound is formed once, stored in the glossary and reused, so a reader never meets two spellings of the same place.

Spelling follows the official word list used in both the Netherlands and Belgium, the Groene Boekje. That settles questions like the linking s and the hyphen in compounds.

Je or u

Dutch uses je between friends and u for politeness, and the line between them sits lower than in German. Colleagues often say je, and many companies address customers with je too. For novels, choose per relationship. For a manual or a website text, pick one form and the whole file follows it.

Readers in Belgium

Flemish readers use the same standard language with different everyday words. A Flemish reader says gsm rather than mobiel, and may call something schoon where a Dutch reader says mooi. Choose Belgium as the variant on the names and style step and word choice follows Flemish usage.

Numbers and dates in Dutch

Dutch writes € 1.240,50, with the currency sign first and a decimal comma. Dates run day, month, year, with the month in lowercase: 1 januari 2027. Times use the 24-hour clock, so a ferry leaves at 14.30 rather than 2:30 pm. These conventions are applied throughout documents and tables, not only in running text.

Word order that sounds Dutch

Dutch sends the verb to the end of subordinate clauses and allows only one element before the verb in a main clause. A translation that follows English order sounds stiff to Dutch readers within a page. Each sentence is rebuilt in Dutch order rather than translated word by word in place.

Price for a Dutch edition

A 90,000-word English novel costs $22.50 in Read mode or $54 in Publish mode. If you translate into Dutch and German together, Pro at $29 a month includes 200,000 words. Adding a second language from the download screen starts it with the same glossary and style settings.

Testing the Dutch chapter

Read the free chapter for compounds and for je and u. Those two give a translation away fastest. If a compound looks wrong, fix it in the glossary rather than in the text, then rerun the chapter; up to three reruns are free.
