English original

On the morning the ferries stopped, Mara Ellison walked the length of the Lantern Quay and counted the boats that would not leave. Eleven. Somewhere behind the fog, the Tidewardens were counting too.

Polish translation

Rankiem, gdy promy przestały kursować, Mara Ellison przeszła całe Nabrzeże Latarni i policzyła łodzie, które nie wypłyną. Jedenaście. Gdzieś za mgłą liczyli także Strażnicy Pływów.

Questions. Short answers.

How much does it cost to translate a book from English to Polish?

A one-off translation costs $0.25 per 1,000 words for reading or $0.60 with glossary, style guide and review. A 90,000-word novel is $54 in Publish mode. You see the exact price before paying.

Will names stay the same in the Polish translation?

Yes. The whole file is read first and every person, place and invented word gets one Polish form. You can change any of them before translation starts.

Are English names declined in Polish?

Yes. Mara becomes Mary or Marze where grammar needs it, while the glossary keeps the base form the same in every chapter.

How is Polish dialogue punctuated?

With a dash at the start of each line of speech, the way Polish books are typeset. Quotation marks stay for quotes inside narration.

English to Polish translation: declined names, dashes and Pan or Pani

Names change their endings, and that is correct

Polish declines names through seven cases. Mara is Mara as a subject, Mary in the genitive, Marze in the dative and Marą in the instrumental. An English name that refuses to decline reads as a mistake to a Polish reader. The translation declines names where grammar needs it and keeps the base form in the glossary.

A woman’s surname that ends in a consonant stays unchanged, so the genitive of Mara Ellison is Mary Ellison, not Mary Ellisona. Rules like this are applied in every chapter.

Ty or Pan and Pani

Polish politeness uses Pan and Pani with the verb in the third person: czy Pani wie, literally does the lady know. Friends and family use ty. The address setting decides which one each relationship uses, and the choice holds across chapters.

Dialogue starts with a dash

Polish books set each line of speech after a dash, and the narration inside it is set off with dashes too. English quotation marks remain only for quotes inside narration. The convention is applied across the whole book.

Why the Polish text has fewer words

Polish has no articles, and case endings do the work English gives to prepositions. The same paragraph usually needs fewer words in Polish, while the number of letters stays close to the English. If you plan a print edition, page count follows letters, not words.

Złoty, dates and ordinals

Polish groups thousands with a space and uses a decimal comma: 1 240,50 zł, with the currency after the amount. Dates run day first, and the month takes the genitive: 1 stycznia 2027. Ordinal numbers take a dot, so the 3rd floor becomes 3. piętro. These conventions are applied across documents and tables, not only in running text.

Checking the free chapter

Read the first conversation aloud. Polish dialogue gives a translation away quickly: a stiff Pan where friends would say ty, or a name left in its base form after a preposition. Fix the address setting or the glossary rather than the text, and rerun the chapter; three reruns are free.

What the Polish edition costs

You pay for the English words only. For our sample, 92,400 words, that is $23.10 in Read mode or $55.44 in Publish mode. The free chapter shows the Polish text before you pay, so you can check the name endings yourself.
